Philips
Nowadays known as a manufacturer of consumer electronics, Philips was once a manufacturer of lighting products. Cooperation with a number of well-known designers, e.g. Louis Kalff, resulted in a number of products that have become design classics. Founded in 1891 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, Philips & Co.was originally created to meet the growing demand for electric lightbulbs following the commercialisation of electricity.
During its first years Philips & Co., the company name was represented in various ways : firstly as a logo formed by the initials of Philips & Co., then the word Philips printed on the glass bulb encasing the metal filament.
One of its very first advertising campaigns was launched in 1898, a campaign in which Anton Philips used postcards featuring Dutch national costumes as marketing tools. Each of the etters in the name Philips was printed on a range of bulbs at the tp of each card. At the end of the 1920s the name Philips began to take the form which we know today.
